Saltwater Salmon Fishing
Early morning, before the sun crests the Fraser valley peaks, the backdrop of the city of Vancouver, the sound of a Honda humming away, a few herring plug cut or a couple of spoons slowly wobbling away ninety feet down and the sound of a single action howling away!! Can you feel it; it’s going to be a good day.
I love ocean fishing and our area offers some great salmon fishing in the ocean near the mouth of the Fraser. This area is a major staging area for all the species of salmon that enter the Fraser. It also has some of the best winter Chinook fishing this side of the west coast. Several small hatchery systems feed directly into the harbour as well as fish that are migrating home to the Fraser. We fish for winter Chinooks as early as January but the best time is around mid February to April. The harbour is usually calm and the majority of ships cruising by are large freight ships on their way into the largest port in B.C.
All of our Vancouver Harbour fishing adventures are based as an extra to some of our winter packages, we primarily fish freshwater throughout the year but like to spice things up with a bit of variety to your trip. We generally base your saltwater day around the weather and your fishing itinerary, generally coinciding with your travel arrangements to and from Vancouver airport. This allows us the opportunity to maximize your fishing adventure and not waste any time in transit. This also happens to be a great way to minimize rental fees for vehicles. If you are looking for a single day saltwater adventure please call us for availability.
During the month of July we book all of our saltwater trips out of ucluellet B.C. , we do this to capitalize on the best timing for Chinooks and early Coho. These dates are a premium adventure and are set to create some of the best saltwater fishing the coast has to offer. These trips are all inclusive packages and are set as three and four day adventures. We fish for Chinooks, Coho, halibut and various other cod and snappers. My preferred method of catching salmon will always be mooching with herring but sometimes the conditions will dictate trolling with downriggers to find the fish. I always try to limit the amount of gear in the water to ensure you have the best fight out of your fish, mainly using dummy flashers and simple herring or anchovies in teaser heads. This is your fill the freezer type of adventure where you will be retaining some of the highest quality table fish there is. You will have all the amenities arranged as well as travel, accommodations, fishing, processing and return travel. We are generally only in this area for a short period of time so space is limited. We also limit group size to three or four anglers per trip. Again we focus on quality adventures rather than quantity. After July we are back on the Fraser targeting the same salmon we just fished for in ucluellet.
Your fishing days are based on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday for the three day adventure and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday for the four day adventure. We base our fishing on the weather to determine if we are heading offshore or staying inshore near the islands around Barkley sound. We try to ensure the calmest option for our guests but sometimes it can become uncomfortable due to weather. If you are prone to motion sickness please advise us and we will recommend some fantastic products to speak with your doctor about. We primarily recommend scopase which is based on body weight rather than a generic patch.
